NoobHereo: I am a great RotMG history nerd

Realmers,

He’s one of our latest Future Seekers and comes from Denmark. He’s a 22-year-old student and game developer named Nikolaj and he won’t be offended if you just call him Noob. Meet NoobHereo.

What is your day job? Tell us about it.

On a daily basis, I study robotics engineering at my university here in Aalborg which is a small city in the upper/north region of Denmark. When I am not studying I make games that are often just small prototypes.

I also contribute to RotMG by testing, giving feedback, and creating new content for all of you to enjoy.

Any hidden talents or hobbies?

I enjoy playing guitar and have been doing it for some years now. I also like to collect old dusty stuff such as artifacts from the stone age, Viking ages and so much more.

How and when did you start playing RotMG?

When I was about 10 or 11 years old my friends and I would RUSH to the school’s computer room every Friday after classes and play random flash games on these terrible Windows XP computers. My friends found Realm of the Mad God and showed it to me. I remember trying to proudly collect all the different colored rings. I thought they were very cool because they had gemstones on them.

Favorite Class, Dungeon, and Item?

My favorite class has got to be the Priest. Living up to my name it goes without saying that I am a noob at this game despite my long playtime, so the priest appeals to my skills because of the range and healing. The priest is also a class that makes you play an important role in small group runs with friends and nowadays has more DPS. I like that a lot.

My favorite dungeon is Tomb of the Ancients. It is a timeless classic that has great difficulty, great design, and most often great payout. Especially when you take the dungeon’s age into consideration. If not tomb then my favorite dungeon is definitely Ancient Ruins.

I am a great RotMG history nerd and thus my favorite item would be the Beer Slurp Generator.

Realm shortly introduced these kinds of items such as the Magic Mushroom, Transformation Potion, etc. And I think these items that aren’t all about damage and DPS is fun and cool to have! Shield of Ogmur is a proud 2nd best item in the game. Who does not love Ogmur??

What other games do you play?

I like to play chess (please do not ask for my rating.. It is horrible) but I also play the Binding of Isaac Repentance and I am currently on the road for 100% in it!

What makes RotMG unique?

RotMG is built on a foundation that most great games are built on which is passion and dedication. As some of you might know this game was made as an entry to a competition where it was submitted by a small team that just wanted to make games. The thing that makes RotMG unique is definitely the balance between rewards and punishments. You get both extremely well rewarded however you can also be punished very harshly with the game’s permadeath. Not just that but the aesthetics and artwork are elevated from this 2010 retro pixel style that just somehow works on a modern standard with things like table decorations, double walls, animated tiles, and so on. It is very cool and rare to see this if you ask me!

What are the things you love the most in the game?

The realm. Without a doubt. I think it is a thing many take for granted once we get used to it. After all, it has been the same for so many years, but it is also everyone’s (and my own) starting place for the game. I used to be amazed by the size of the map and could roam the realm for hours exploring something new.

Even today the realm is what connects the dungeons, players, and all the cool battles and setpieces together. With that said the Realm also has a ton of potential, just waiting to be used.

What would you change?

I have always hoped to see more classes in the game. There was once an idea for a class called Gun Slinger which is something I would love to see along with other cool classes. And then for the Realm to perhaps be expanded upon or have new setpieces as a way to add more elements to the exploration part of the game. The new shatters has done this very well alongside various other dungeon reworks across difficulties such as the Pirate Cave.

What made you join the Future Seekers?

I have been part of this community for more than 10 years and I think that any passionate RotMG player would love to have the chance of playing a part in the inner workings of this game.

Not only that but also being part of creating things as a tribute to what this game has given me over the years. It also goes very well with me being a game developer. Who would not love to work on such a cool game!?

How do you see the game in 10 years?

In 10 years I think RotMG will be changed in ways that assist the players to be more social. This could be reworks and modifications to the teleportation system, especially in the Realm. Perhaps setpieces could be warp points? I also think the game will be more competitive with new game modes, challenges, quests and so much more. Especially speed runs. And maybe. Just maybe, development on Elder Realms will begin by then 😉
