Moloch: “my guildmates will always bring me back”

InterviewTags: ,

Hello Realmers,

With the end of the Month of The Mad God, it is time to return to our weekly interviews. English teacher and fan of boardgames, and FPSs, here’s one of our beloved Future Seekers: Moloch. (What is a Future Seeker? Find out soon!)

Nationality?

Hey, Moloch here! I used to go by Uhgthis back in the Kabam days on the forums, so you may know me by that name – Some individuals (Toastrz) still call me by that name to this day. I was originally from the Netherlands but have lived most of my life in America.

What is your day job? Tell us about it.

I am finishing up my teaching degree while teaching English at a Highschool level (9th and 11th grade). I love working with kids and helping them along with their academic careers. English may not seem like an important part of education but writing and reading comprehension is a skill that we all use daily in our adult lives, and I am ready to help as much as I can to make sure everyone is prepared for when they enter it.

Any hidden talents or hobbies?

I don’t think I have any particularly interesting talents, especially hidden ones. As for hobbies I love reading (English teacher loves reading, what a surprise!) and playing boardgames. I have quite the collection with over 200 and counting. If I had to name a favourite of either I would say Brandon Sanderson for an author, and Mage Knight for a boardgame.

How and when did you start playing RotMG?

I actually learned about Realm of the Mad God when I was in the library one afternoon in 2013. I was on one of the computers browsing when someone came up next to me and started playing it. I watched for a little while and decided that I would have to try it out for myself. Ever since then, I have been playing with only one major break but the draw of having fun with my guildmates will always bring me back.

Favorite Class, Dungeon, and Item?

My favourite class would have to be Necromancer, I love the combination of range and healing. I always valued survival over damage, so it is the perfect class to compliment my playstyle. My favorite dungeon would have to be Lair of Draconis. I know I just lost a lot of you there but hear me out: it most certainly is not for the loot, we all know that it could use more, it is because of the variations to the fight when you go through it. I love how you can do LoD a decent number of times and still have new variations you hadn’t seen before show up. It overall feels nice to play and doesn’t have any unfair deaths (That business with Nikao doesn’t count). When it comes to my favourite item I don’t know if I really have one. I can say my favourite pet skin is Bookwyrm though. I have a love/hate relationship with it because it took over a year and over 1000 Cursed Libraries for me to finally get it.

What other games do you play?

Other than boardgames, I will play most genres but lean more into the FPS side of video games. I loved the Mass Effect and Bioshock games but currently am playing a lot Valorant. I enjoy the competitive side where communication/cooperation can be just as important as your ability to aim.  I more recently started playing Monster Hunter and have loved that, so I’m looking forward to the release of Rise on PC.

What makes RotMG unique?

I think the community is truly amazing. Coming from games such as CS:GO/CoD I am used to a lot of pretty bad behaviour, but I believe the current state of the community is overall pretty good. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely some sore spots that deserve work put into, but it is one of the very few games I can hop on and almost always be able to have a friendly chat with someone I have never met before and make friends. The same people I met, and joined a guild with, in the first year of playing are still the people I talk to every day and enjoy playing with today (We don’t even always play RotMG, we have branched out and do other activities). I have yet to play another game in which I could do this in.

What would you change?

This is a rough one since I feel like there are so many changes that I think would greatly improve the game’s experience. Between the state of the realm, guilds, new player experience, progression, there is just so much that can be made even better. I believe the change I want the most would be to the realm cycle. I feel like the realm should be the main place the game takes place in which isn’t necessarily the case currently. I would love to see the realm updated to have different themed maps other than the same Beach->Lowlands->Midlands->Highlands->Mountain progression. I really believe the realm is the key part of the game and if that gets updated to have variety and progression, the game will have more variety and even leave more room to expand in the future.

What made you join the Future Seekers?

I joined because I believed that the game has a lot of potential and I would love to help influence and give feedback on the direction it is headed. When I was reached out to, I jumped at the opportunity to help improve the game I loved and have played for many years.

How do you see the game in 10 years?

I can see a bright future where all of the problems I previously mentioned have been worked on and the game still has room for expansion. I hope in ten years I will launch the game and feel like there are things I have not yet achieved and goals I have not yet met- The type of feeling that I will spend the next 6 hours playing and when I get off, I will only long for when I can get back on.

Thanks for sharing! Also Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author as well! If anyone who likes reading fantasy hasn’t heard of him, give his books a try
