Maggie: “snake pits were too dangerous to enter”

Events, Interview

It’s Thursday! It’s also Fall in the northern hemisphere. Meet the author of some amazing artwork: Maggie! And check the end of the post to see when you can also meet the Pumpkin Master.

Nationality and Age?

Hello! I am Maggie! I hail from the United States and currently live in the 45th worst state (guess which one!) I recently turned 21 in July.

What is your day job? Tell us about it.

I am a College Student studying computer science with a minor in art history and game design! I am a very bad student and actively neglecting my classwork to write this interview.

Any hidden talents or hobbies?

I can do anything you ask me extremely poorly unless I know how to do it.

No but actually I love baking, I’m bad at it but I still love to do it. My massive sweet tooth forces me to create sweet things, and then I’ll become a sweeter person!

I can vaguely program and have participated in 2 game jams and am currently working on a cool game with my friend.

My other secret hobby is creating digital tournaments of my friend’s original monster creations using a custom-built engine. (I will not elaborate further.)

I’m also very good at making friends. In fact, the person reading this right now is now my friend !!!

How and when did you start playing RotMG?

Way way back in the late Kabam era I picked up the game by accident and forced my friends to play it with me! We would make a new account every time we played and had no idea how the game worked so we actively scoured the realm for forbidden jungles, and snake pits were far too dangerous to enter.

Favorite Class, Dungeon, and Item?

My favorite class is English

My favorite dungeon is the Candyland Hunting Ground, it is the worst dungeon in the game.

Favorite item is Beer Slurp! It’s the rarest and cutest item I have and I cherish it deeply…

What other games do you play?

Neopets! It’s been the one thing I’ve consistently played on and off for about 14 years of my sad, sad life and I love the stupid thing to death even if it’s antiquated, gets no significant updates, and is actually not a very good game.

In terms of other games I love to play: I’m obviously big into pokemon and I like the monster hunter games. I really like playing jrpgs from years ago that nobody cares about like Fossil Fighters or Live a Live.

And my favorite games are Cave Story and Terraria probably, or at least those are the games I’ve put the most time into.

Also, I love the rhythm heaven series and shoutouts to Knytt Stories for being the first metroidvania-ish game I ever played and getting me into that genre.

Honestly, I like too many games to list! (but I should probably move on to the next question now)

What makes RotMG unique?

Well, it’s a pixel art/2d MMO for one. I think there no/not many other games like that atm, which is pretty cool.

I’ve always been kinda drawn to how open it feels like there isn’t really a strict order or progression of stuff to do once you reach a certain threshold, and most of the content is at the least kinda worth doing at any point in progression, it’s strangely a relaxing sorta experience sometimes.

What would you change?

I kinda wish pets had a little more… to them? As of right now, there’s one strictly good pet build that is basically mandatory to go for if you wanna do anything more difficult than a tomb. I dunno what I’d change or add to them specifically right now but it feels a bit like a shallow puddle of a mechanic that most players take completely for granted aside from it just being a grinding treadmill to get the big heals.

Also, I’d change the Candyland Hunting Grounds. Goodness me that dungeon could use some changes.

Also, I’d add a fishing minigame.

What made you join the Future Seekers?

I accidentally posted a bunch of art onto the RotMG subreddit (slip of the finger mostly) and then John Deca himself came to my door.

In actuality it just seemed like fun, I wanted to make stuff for a cool game I liked and I can probably put it on a resume or something cool like that. If there’s something I really wanna do is to help put together an ARG because the last two have been silly fun and I feel like I could make something stupid and elaborate too.

How do you see the game in 10 years?

Fishing, farming, mining, and pet racing minigames have all been added to the game. Nobody actually goes to the realm or runs dungeons anymore, despite them continually being added. This is all directly my fault. At some point, someone bought an air freshener at Deca, and now the company building smells faintly of pine. Toast is drafted into the NFL. Deca Triton is dating Deca Dys. Deca Niegil used company resources to embezzle money into a Dry Cleaner. Deca Baragon commits tax fraud.

What is your favorite animal?

Posm

We agree that possums are beautiful. The same cannot be said for The Pumpkin Master, who is an actual pest. Purge him (he will spawn every time you defeat Skuld) from the Haunted Cemetery from tomorrow, November 5th until the end of the Halloween event on November 11th, for a chance at his usual spooky drops:

  • Bow of Nightmares
  • Skull-splitter Sword
  • Dagger of the Terrible Talon
  • Staff of Horrific Knowledge
  • Wand of Ancient Terror
  • Corrupted Cleaver
  • Giant Vampire Bat Skin
  • Pumpkin Head Pet Skin
  • Jack-o-mancer Skin
  • T10 Weapons
  • T11 Weapons
  • T11 Armors
  • T12 Armors
  • T5 Rings
  • Potion of Attack
  • Potion of Defense
  • Potion of Mana
  • Pet Eggs
