    8×8 Character Skins:

    • PNG format.
    • Width: 56px
    • Height: 24px, 3x8px frames per skin or dye mask
    • Each frame is 8x8px
    • Transparent background
    • Include dye masks after skins.
    • Masks must be properly aligned.
    • If more than one skin: all skins, then all masks.
    • The green in masks must not contain red or blue.
    • The red in masks must not contain green or blue.
    • Do not blatantly use copyrighted material.
    • Creating a GIF preview is recommended.

    16×16 Character Skins:

    • PNG format.
    • Width: 112px
    • Height: 48px per skin or dye mask
    • Each frame is 16x16px
    • Transparent background
    • Include dye masks after skins.
    • Masks must be properly aligned.
    • If more than one skin: all skins, then all masks.
    • The green in masks must not contain red or blue.
    • The red in masks must not contain green or blue.
    • Do not blatantly use copyrighted material.
    • Creating a GIF preview is recommended.

    Tips and tricks:

    • In the second profile attack frame, pets and players can both can go out of the 8×8 or 16×16 bounds.
    • When attacking, characters usually walk. Give them walking or otherwise dynamic legs in attack frames!

    • However, you might want to avoid making them move too much in these frames, as they may look disorienting with high fire rate weapons.
    • If the character’s body is an odd number of pixels, making coherent front and back frames will be easier.
    • Sticking to fewer colors will make your sprite more readable. You might want to look for a color palette website!
    • Usually the clothing mask should cover more area than the accessory mask.
    • Use an RGB color picker to make sure your mask colors are correct.
    • Set up an 8×8 grid in your software of choice to help align the sprites.
    • Masks can and often should be shaded.
    • Have fun!

    • Piskel is a free browser app can also create animated GIFs.
    • Paint.NET is a free desktop app.
    • GraphicsGale can also create animations.
    • Aseprite is a popular premium option.
