Interview with Sebchoof, RotMG Content Creator

Development Update

Sebchoof has been part of the RotMG content scene for a long time, and if you’ve watched RotMG content, chances are you’ve come across his work.

We last spoke with him a while back, so we caught up again to talk about what it’s really like creating RotMG content full-time, how he stays motivated in such a niche space, and the ideas that keep pushing his videos forward.

You’ve been creating RotMG content for a long time now. Do you remember what first pushed you to start making videos and sharing them publicly?

I played RotMG for a long time by mid-2018, and since i always tried really hard to become better and was competitive it was getting quite samey so i started trying to do challenge runs and speedruns. The majority of my first videos which are now unlisted are challenges around The Void when it was at least five times harder, for example duo, one corner only, trying to beat it when the water flooded, etc. However my first video every was just a speedrun of the previous sprite world (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4xbUm7E_RY)

As a full-time creator, what does a “normal” workday look like for you when it comes to planning, recording, editing, and engaging with your audience?

I probably should organise my days better but i just have a heap of stuff to do and i do them in random order XD most of the time im either editing footage or streaming. I make sure to distract myself by reading and replying to every message in my discord. With the amount i stream and upload i get some help on the editing side for some videos so i prepare things to send them to create a video like the footage, voice recordings, general plan for the video, etc.

What part of being a content creator do you think people underestimate the most?

Rotmg content creation is definitely one of the hardest jobs out there. But in all seriousness it is much tougher than you might expect it to be. Especially because you cant just record your normal RotMG gameplay and stream it or upload it and call is a day. When you play RotMG normally it consists of you repeatedly farming a boss or a few under pretty safe conditions. As you can imagine its not the most entertaining thing to watch so you really need to think outside of the box and imagine yourself in the viewers’ shoes to create something special enough for people to spend their limited time to watch. Ideas i consistantly make streams and videos around include: challenge runs, RotMG Randzomier, RotMG Geoguesser, Level 1 Community Challenge Runs, to name a few 😀

What’s been one of the most challenging moments in your creator journey, and how did you push through it?

There were two massive challenge with doing RotMG content full time. First was going full time initially because it sounded great in my mind but as RotMG became my job in a sense it was no longer just a hobby that i was doing along side my office job. This made it feel liek something I needed to do and really hurt my pscychology around gaming. It was tough to stomach that it was something i need to do and at a higher frequency but have grown to love it a lot. Secondly, im probably the only RotMG content ever to be able to sustain doing RotMG content full time because its a small space and hard to justify financially. Over the years I have considered making RotMG content a side-thing again but since then ive been able to figure out ways to gain enough support to do RotMG conent safely full time. Big shoutout to the twitch subscribers especially the tier 3s and gifters. I put their names in each video ❤️

Your channel has grown into a huge part of the RotMG community. How do you handle the pressure or expectations that come with that visibility?

At first it was weird and surreal but its now my motivation to stream and create even more content Is there a piece of content you’ve made that you’re especially proud of, even if it didn’t perform the way you expected? Challenge run videos involving one dungeon has never been too popular of a type of RotMG content but I still love doing it! Even though its raw footage one of my favourite videos on my channel that ive extremelly proud of and only recently uploaded is this Void solo https://youtu.be/iVkPHsDPYSE

How do you balance creativity with consistency, especially when content creation is your full-time job?

Errrrrr not well 😀 My brain only allows be to channel into specific things so you’ll often see me doing a month long streaming marathon, or month long editing grind, or a month where i do life stuff. I really should learn how to balance it better…..

What keeps you motivated to keep creating RotMG content after all this time?

Initially my idols motivated me to start uploading and continue through the challenges that come with being a new RotMG creator like the low visibility. Ive always been inspired by the challenge runs of the guild Black Bullet and the player BTL but also the amazing editing and story telling of GHZD. I always wanted to become a fusion of those since all challenge run content was super vanilla and lacked the magic of editing that GHZD videos really had. As time went on and RotMG Content Creaters became more of an endangered species my main motviation because myself because as all other big content creators struggled to sustain themself and fizzled off in the new content landscape i somehow survived. The declining player count because of all the other games out there has made it hard to get attention compared to back in the day where count was four times bigger and people could upload much more general content and get the same amount of views. Getting attention from big names like Drututt has always pushed me to keep going but my biggest driving force is the support from you guys. I wouldn’t be here without you ❤️

For players or creators who look up to you, what advice would you give to someone who wants to take content creation seriously?

I MISS how lively the content space was around 2021 and I hope we get there again some day so I hope you reading this might give RotMG content creation a shot!!! As mentioned before, people would rather play normal RotMG than watch it since watching someone chain 20 of the same dungeon under safe circumstances is not the more interesting thing. Find ways to make RotMG content spicy and always put yourself in the viewers shoes and question, “would I watch this?” and “how could i make this more entertaining for viewers?” I would avoid streaming or uploading normal RotMG gameplay or PPEs since theyre overdone (unless you want to of course). You can make normal RotMG content much more entertaining by adding challenge like for example: no pet, no nexus key, no keys, etc. You could also make normal RotMG content entertaining in videos if you edit it enough (GHZD and Desotroya were masters at this). Some ideas that have potential in my opinion are item/set reviews, lore videos, and highly edited rotmg videos.

Any last comments?

Thanks everyone for making my dream of making RotMG content full time possible. Love the game and you all too much!! Will continue with you guys to keep RotMG alive ❤️
